Mr. Allen was an exceptional person, however I'll focus on his philanthropic efforts only.
Philanthropy Allen gave more than $2 billion towards the advancement of science, technology, education, wildlife conservation, the arts, and community services in his lifetime.[13] The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, which he founded with his sister Jody, was established to administer a portion of Allen's philanthropic contributions. Since its formation, the foundation has given more than $494 million to over 1,500 nonprofits; and,[111] in 2010, Allen became a signatory of The Giving Pledge, promising to give at least half of his fortune to philanthropic causes.[112] Allen received commendations for his philanthropic commitments including the Andrew Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy[113] and Inside Philanthropy*'*s "Philanthropist of the Year".[114] Science and research 📷 Allen (right) studies a brain sample with Allan Jones, CEO of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, in 2011. In September 2003, Allen launched the Allen Institute for Brain Science with a $100 million contribution dedicated to understanding how the human brain works. In total, Allen donated $500 million to the institute, making it his single largest philanthropic recipient. Since its launch, the Allen Institute for Brain Science has taken a Big Science and open science approach to tackle projects. The institute makes research tools available to the scientific community using an open data model.[115] Some of the institute's projects include the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas, Allen Human Brain Atlas and the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. The Allen Institute is also helping to advance and shape the White House's BRAIN Initiative as well as the Human Brain Project.[116] Founded in 2014, the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2)'s main focus is to research and engineer artificial intelligence.[117] The institute is modeled after the Allen Institute for Brain Science and led by researcher and professor, Dr. Oren Etzioni. AI2 has undertaken four main projects, Aristo, Semantic Scholar, Euclid, and Plato. As of 2015 Project Aristo is working to build an AI system capable of passing an 8th-grade science exam.[118] In December 2014, Allen committed $100 million to create the Allen Institute for Cell Science in Seattle. The institute is investigating and creating a virtual model of cells in the hope of bringing forth treatment of different diseases.[119] Like the institutes before it, all data generated and tools developed will be made publicly available online.[120] Launched in 2016 with a $100 million commitment, The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group aims to discover and support ideas at the frontier of bioscience in an effort to accelerate the pace of discovery.[121] The group will target scientists and research areas that "some might consider out-of-the-box at the very edges of knowledge".[122] Allen launched the Allen Distinguished Investigators Awards (ADI) in 2010 to support scientists pursuing early-stage research projects who often have difficulty securing funding from traditional sources.[123] Allen donated the seed money to build SETI's Allen Telescope Array, eventually contributing $30 million to the project.[124] The Paul Allen's flower fly was named in recognition of his contributions to Dipterology.[125] Environment and conservation Allen provided more than $7 million to fund a census of elephant populations in Africa, the largest such endeavour since the 1970s. The Great Elephant Census team flew over 20 countries to survey African savannah elephants. The survey results were published in 2015 and showed rapid rates of decline which were accelerating.[126] He began supporting the University of British Columbia's Sea Around Us) Project in 2014 to improve data on global fisheries as a way to fight illegal fishing. Part of his $2.6 million in funding went towards the creation of FishBase,[127] an online database about adult finfish.[128] Allen funded the Global FinPrint initiative, launched in July 2015, a three-year survey of sharks and rays in coral reef areas. The survey is the largest of its kind and designed to provide data to help conservation programs.[129][130] Allen backed Washington state initiative 1401 to prohibit the purchase, sale and distribution of products made from 10 endangered species including elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, marine turtles, pangolins, sharks and rays. The initiative gained enough signatures to be on the state's ballot on November 3, 2015, and passed.[131] Alongside the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), Allen and Vulcan Inc. launched the Smart City Challenge,[132] a contest inviting American cities to transform their transportation systems. Created in 2015 with the USDOT's $40 million commitment as well as $10 million from Allen's Vulcan Inc., the challenge aims to create a first-of-its-kind modern city that will demonstrate how cities can improve quality of life while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.[133] The winning city was Columbus, Ohio.[134] As a founding member of the International SeaKeepers Society, Allen hosted its proprietary SeaKeeper 1000TM oceanographic and atmospheric monitoring system on all three of his megayachts.[135] Allen funded the building of microgrids, which are small-scale power grids that can operate independently, in Kenya, to help promote reusable energy and empower its businesses and residents.[136] He was an early investor in the Mawingu Networks, a wireless and solar-powered Internet provider which aims to connect rural Africa with the world, and Off Grid Electric, a company focused on providing solar energy to people in emerging nations.[137] Ebola In 2014, Allen pledged at least $100 million toward the fight to end the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa,[138] making him the largest private donor in the Ebola crisis. He also created a website called TackleEbola.org[139] as a way to spread awareness and serve as a vehicle for donors to fund projects in need. The site highlighted organizations working to stop Ebola that Allen supported, such as International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, Médecins Sans Frontières, Partners in Health, UNICEF and World Food Program USA. On April 21, 2015, Allen brought together key leaders in the Ebola fight at the Ebola Innovation Summit in San Francisco. The summit aimed to share key learnings and reinforce the need for continued action and support to reduce the number of Ebola cases to zero, which was achieved in January 2016.[140] In October 2015, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation announced it would award seven new grants totaling $11 million to prevent future widespread outbreaks of the virus.[141] Exploration 📷 RV Petrel arriving at Surigao City in 2018 In 2012, along with his research team and the Royal Navy, Allen attempted to retrieve the ship's bell from HMS Hood), which sank in the Denmark Strait during World War II, but the attempt failed due to poor weather. On August 7, 2015, they tried again and recovered the bell in very good condition.[142] It was restored and put on display in May 2016 in the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth, in remembrance of the 1,415 crewmen lost.[143] Since 2015, Allen funded the research ship RV Petrel, which he purchased in 2016. The project team aboard Petrel was responsible for locating the Japanese battleship Musashi in 2015.[144] In 2017, at Allen's direction, Petrel found USS Indianapolis), USS Ward), the wrecks of the Battle of Surigao Strait and the Battle of Ormoc Bay. In 2018, Petrel found a lost US Navy C-2A Greyhound aircraft in the Philippine Sea, USS Lexington) in the Coral Sea and the USS Juneau) off the coast of the Solomon Islands.[145][146][147] Museums and community institutions Allen established non-profit community institutions to display his collections of historic artifacts. These include: Museum of Pop Culture, or MoPOP, is a nonprofit museum, dedicated to contemporary popular culture inside a Frank Gehry–designed building at Seattle Center, established in 2000.[148] Flying Heritage Collection, which showcases restored vintage military aircraft and armaments primarily from the World War II era, established in 2004.[149] STARTUP Gallery, a permanent exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque dedicated to the history of the microcomputer, established in 2007.[150] Living Computer: Museum + Labs, a collection of vintage computers in working order and available for interactive sessions on-site or through networked access, opened to the public in 2012.[151][152] Art An active art collector, Allen gifted more than $100 million to support the arts.[153] On October 15, 2012, the Americans for the Arts gave Allen the Eli and Edythe Broad Award for Philanthropy in the Arts.[154] Allen loaned out more than 300 pieces from his private art collection to 47 different venues. The original 541-page typescript of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula was in his collection at one point.[155] In 2013, Allen sold Barnett Newman's Onement VI (1953) at Sotheby's in New York for $43.8 million, then the record for a work by the abstract artist.[156][157] In 2015, Allen founded the Seattle Art Fair, a four-day event with 60-plus galleries from around the world including the participation of the Gagosian Gallery, David Zwirner. The event drew thousands and inspired other satellite fairs throughout the city.[158] In August 2016, Allen announced the launch of Upstream Music Fest + Summit,[159] an annual festival fashioned after South by Southwest.[160] Held in Pioneer Square, the first festival took place in May 2017.[161] It was cancelled in 2019 following Allen's death in 2018.[162] In November 2022, Allen's art collection was auctioned at Chrsitie's New York.[163] It was the biggest sale in art auction history, surpassing $1.5 billion in sales. Six works sold for more than $100 million: Seurat’s Les Poseuses Ensemble (Petite version), ($149 million, with fees); Paul Cézanne’s 1888-90 La Montagne Sainte-Victoire ($138 million); van Gogh’sVerger avec cyprès ($117 million); and Gustav Klimt’s 1903 Birch Forest ($105 million). The auction also included paintings by Botticelli, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Jan Brueghel the Younger. Proceeds from the auction benefitted undisclosed philanthropies. [164][165][166] Education 📷 Allen and Steve Wozniak at the Living Computer Museum in 2017 In 1989, Allen donated $2 million to the University of Washington to construct the Allen Library, which was named after his father Kenneth S. Allen, a former associate director of the University of Washington library system.[167] In the same year, Allen donated an additional $8 million to establish the Kenneth S. Allen Library Endowment.[168] In 2012, the endowment was renamed the Kenneth S. and Faye G. Allen Library Endowment after Allen's mother (a noted bibliophile) died.[169] In 2002, Allen donated $14 million to the University of Washington to construct the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering.[170] The building was dedicated in October 2003.[171] In 2010, Allen announced a gift of $26 million to build the Paul G. Allen School of Global Animal Health at Washington State University, his alma mater. The gift was the largest private donation in the university's history.[172] In 2016, Allen pledged a $10 million donation over four years for the creation of the Allen Discovery Centers at Tufts University and Stanford University. The centers would fund research that would read and write the morphogenetic code. Over eight years the donation could be as much as $20 million.[173] In 2017, Allen donated $40 million (with an additional $10 million from Microsoft) to reorganize the University of Washington's Computer Science and Engineering department into the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering.[174]
Because of my field of study, I appreciate him mostly for his contributions to brain sciences in terms of donations and investments. Mr. Allen was alive when his endowments already had helped researchers usher a new age in neuroscience. Hence, he's someone everyone can find something to be impressed by. Paul Allen as an industrial pioneer and a philanthropist would be a flair this subreddit should be proud to have along with his childhood friend Bill Gates.
The relationship between Allen and Gates became strained as they argued even over small things.[24] Allen effectively left Microsoft in 1982 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, though he remained on the board of directors as vice chairman.[22][35] Gates reportedly asked Allen to give him some of his shares to compensate for the higher amount of work that Gates was doing.[36][37] According to Allen, Gates said that he "did almost everything on BASIC" and the company should be split 60–40 in his favor. Allen agreed to this arrangement, which Gates later renegotiated to 64–36.[38] In 1983, Gates tried to buy Allen out at $5 per share, but Allen refused and left the company with his shares intact; this made him a billionaire when Microsoft went public.[38][39] Gates later repaired his relationship with Allen, and the two men donated $2.2 million to their childhood school Lakeside in 1986.[24] They remained friends for the rest of Allen's life.[40]

Nugu Roundup #102 - C=λν - 220710 + Album Giveaway!
Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup! What is this?: This is a bi-weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below! In the last roundup we celebrated Pride Month with Lionesses. This week let's check out the future of Cube with LIGHTSUM! Look at the first comment below for the winner of the 54th album giveaway plus details on this roundup's album up for grabs! What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition. Let's get on with the show... ________________________________________________________ LIGHTSUM Who are they?: An eight member girl group under Cube Entertainment. Their name comes from the desire to bring hope and positive energy to everyone and share their light with the sum of the world. Their fandom name is SUMIT meaning that fans with become "IT" the focus of LIGHTSUM and together they will climb the SUMMIT. Company: Cube Entertainment is known for girl group G-(I)DLE and boy groups BTOB and Pentagon as well as LIGHTSUM, plus a number of soloists including Jo Kwon and Peniel. They are the former home of girl groups 4MINUTE and CLC as well as boy group BEAST and special project groups TROUBLEMAKER and Triple H. They founded the music school and trainee incubator Modern K Music Academy in conjunction with RBW and Shinsadong Tiger. Members
Juhyeon
Position: Leader, Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist
Real Name: Lee Juhyeon
Age: 18 (IA)
Facts: She has had the longest trainee period in the group, joining Cube in 2014 as a trainee. She is not the eldest in the group, and is in fact the youngest leader of any non-kid or tween idol group, likely selected because of her long trainee experience. She competed in The Unit and Dancing High. She chose to take her high school equivalency exam instead of perusing a traditional high school path. She has been dancing since she was in 2nd grade and took part in dance cover teams and cheerleading through elementary and middle school. She can speak Japanese and helped Japanese member Hina acclimate to Korean. She is very animated when she speaks using a lot of hand gestures, leading other members to nickname her Robotju because her motions reminded them of robots. She is good friends with Soyeon who joined Cube as a trainee shortly after she did, and though she's Soyeon's senior in terms of time at Cube she calls Soyeon her senior because she debuted first. She can play the guitar. Her mother runs a snack shop. Her role models are BoA and Hyuna. She enjoys mint and yogurt candies but not in combination with chocolate, and doesn't care for chocolate at all.

She says as a child she loved watching the ISAC events and she dreamed of becoming an idol so that she could take part in them. The other members say she has a friendly bubbly and spontaneous personality, and sometimes they run into her in the elevator asking where she's going and she says she won't know until she gets there. Her favorite type of songs to listen to are ballads. The group's Maknae Jian follows her around the most. Her favorite food is chicken and she wants to do a CF for Pelicana Chicken, which is her favorite restaurant. The other members always trust her judgement on where to eat and say she's never led them wrong. She was a fan of SNSD as a child and says they inspired her to become a singer. Her role models are Suzy and CL. She also likes spicy foods like Buldak Ramen and Sichaun Chinese food.
Chowon
Position: Main Vocalist
Real Name: Han Chowon
Age: 19 (IA)
Facts: She competed on Produce 48 and was the victim of vote manipulation, rightly placing sixth where she would have become a member of IZ*ONE but had her score dropped so that her announced final ranking was 13th, just missing the group. She can play the piano, guitar, organ, and drums. She has a natural affinity for math. The younger members say that they were intimidated by her at first but found she was warm and caring after they got to know her. She and Sangah have a Tom & Jerry relationship. She has appeared in a number of Korean Movies, Dramas, and Web Dramas. Her favorite type of music to listen to is R&B, but she likes playing classical and jazz on the piano. She has a large perfume collection and matches different scents to her different outfits. She says she has a special affinity for red and burgandy, but wants to try out ash grey hair. Her favorite food is gopchang, and says she and Sangah once ate $70 worth together.
Nayoung
Position: Main Vocalist, Lead Dancer
Real Name: Kim Yayoung
Age: 19 (IA)
Facts: She is from Chuncheon, a city to the northwest of Seoul known for beautiful lakes and chicken farming. She is a former Banana Culture trainee and took part in Produce 48. She had taken part in a multi-company audition and had passed FNC, Source Music, and Woollim as well, but chose Banana Culture. She started training in dance because she was painfully shy in school and thought it would be a way for her to become more outgoing. She is very popular amongst Japanese fans. She prefers a clean and simple style, usually picking a white shirt and accessorizing around it. She says she has the food tastes of a grandmother, with her favorite foods being eggs with black sesame and Yeon Yanggaeng, a traditional Korean sweet made of red bean paste.
Hina
Position: Vocalist
Real Name: Nagai Hina
Age: 19 (IA)
Facts: She is Japanese and from Tokyo. She attended the Maru Dance Academy, which is a Kpop academy in Tokyo, where she was scouted by Cube's Japanese office. She came to Korea in 2019 but had to briefly return to Japan because of COVID. She has studied ballet for 12 years. She is a big fan of Twice, and says Sana is her favorite and her role model. She would spend her pocket money on Twice albums in Japan and attended Twice high touch events and their concert at the Tokyo Dome. She says Chowon is her best friend in the group. She procrastinates a lot but she's also a perfectionist so she'll stay up late to finish something right after delaying it. Her role models are IU and Tayeon. Tteokbokki is her favorite food, and she doesn't like seafood.
Huiyeon
Position: Vocalist
Real Name: Oh Huiyeon
Age: 16 (IA)

She loves to ride rollercoasters. She has experience with figure skating. She is good at Aegyo and Yujeong says she taught her how to do it. She's often mistaken for the Maknae since Jian has a mature appearance. She likes bitter things like espresso and Korean Black Ginseng, and also rice noodles and bean sprout soup. She says that the one thing she can't eat is stinky tofu.
Jian
Position: Vocalist, Rapper, Maknae
Real Name: Kim Jian
Age: 15 (IA)
Facts: She is a former JYP Trainee. She is said to resemble a Sanrio cat character and has been nicknamed Jinyang (presumably because of the cat-like persona as opposed to any ability to tell hotdogs from other things). She writes her own rap lyrics. She was cast into Cube via someone noticing her social media accounts. She was one of the youngest idols to officially debut at the time, having been born after the debut of groups such as Brown Eyed Girls and Big Bang, and only three months before previous Cube senior Hyuna debuted in Wonder Girls. She is good friends with Mire of TRI.BE and Joa of Weeekly. Her favorite food is Sushi, and she hates beets.
Debut: June 10th, 2021 with Vanilla (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)

The song itself combines elements of EDM dance and an upbeat cute pop sound.

First Comeback: October 13th, 2021 with Vivace (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: The title track from the group's Maxi-Single "Light a Wish" this song was inspired by the Italian phrase for "quick and lively" and carries the message that the group is on a journey of "we" and will spread their light and positivity to the world. The song itself embraces a combination of future bass and glossy glitz-pop with a more mature and elegant image.
Most Recent Comeback: May 24th, 2022 with Alive (MV) Live Stage (Link) Dance Practice (Link)
Song: The title track from their first EP "Into the Light" this is described as a "Fusion Groove" that blends EDM, Pop, and House. The MV features updated trendy school and sporty looks and speaks about how falling in love can add light and color to an otherwise boring life.
Trivia: All of the members are fans of Pumpkin Juice which they drink whenever promoting for its health benefits. While the group has official positions they're somewhat fluid in actual performances and MVs with non-Main/Lead positions often getting focus elements in their songs. Another name that was considered for the group was GRIT, an acronym for "Girls Rising in The world", but it was abandoned because of the similarity in name to a Korean brand of yogurt. The group has been appointed ambassadors for the Korean Children's Diabetes Foundation and were representatives for the Korean Department of Defense's Anti-Smoking campaign. They have performed in Austria at the Danube River Music Festival and will be performing in the USA at KCON LA in August. ________________________________________________________ Soloist of the Week HANEOL Who is he?: A male singer-songwriter and soloist under Big Soul Records. Composers/Producers:Lee Gukhyun (Hello Goodboy) (see above)
Active Between: June 2013 - Sometime in 2017 Reasons for Disbanding: After 2ABLE signed the group it sent two members to the Produce 101 but though they'd announced a full comeback for the group it never materialized, and appears they decided to simply work with the members as individuals. Trivia: 2ABLE signed the group in 2016 and signed an additional seven member, but the group never had a comeback under their agency. Member Yongjin Roel were sent to compete in Produce 101. While Produce 101 was ongoing leader of the group Steelo was arrested under suspicion of being involved in a drug smuggling ring in Seoul's Gangnam district as part of a large Seoul Metropolitan Police dragnet that arrested 19 people in total. Yongjin later changed his stage name to Jini and joined the group AWEEK and later MEGAMAX where he is currently a member. Roel changed to going by his real name Wontak and took part in special project group RAINZ and is now a soloist. _______________________________________________________ That's it for today, let's get the discussion on! As always, if you have any suggestions for groups, content, or things you'd like to see, please let me know in the comments below. Also as always, a big shout-out to u/not-named-in-credits for founding nugutown and u/sharnaranwan for continuing the work over there.
29 different songs so far on the Once Twice Melody tour is a bit less than usual, but it's still an impressive variety for a band showcasing a sprawling, four-part album. Plus as the shows get even more visual, it probably gets harder to expand the live catalog.
Even more impressive is how few songs they've never performed live! I imagine several more from OTM will be debuted when they're ready.
This tour has had no songs from Devotion and only one each from TYLS and the self-titled debut. But they definitely remembered those albums on the 7 tour.
The most surprising 2022 omissions are probably Sparks, 10 Mile Stereo, Wild, and Master of None. I'd bet one or more of those are performed again later in this tour or the next time around.
I can't believe it's been almost 7 years since "Zebra" was performed. I used to think it was their biggest song when Teen Dream first came out, but clearly that's changed over the years.

Mar/3/2022: Gazprom's $165 contract; Armenia to measure gas quality on border __ Will produce fertilizer & meat locally __ Karabakh map on Russian TV __ Fiber optic __ Univ. revoked after "selling diplomas" __ Inflation __ Mining royalties __ North-South-East railway reconstruction __ Ukraine war
Welcome, new readers. This is your daily 15-minute Thursday digest in 3871 words.
small farms will receive subsidies to purchase fertilizer
Global fertilizer prices skyrocketed recently. During today's session, the government approved a 50% subsidy ($18) for nitrogen/phosphorus/potassium fertilizer bags. The prices recently went from $16 to $39. Economy Minister Kerobyan: I would like to use this opportunity and call on the villagers to cultivate their lands as much as possible because we anticipate serious food security challenges. On the other hand, we see that food prices are rising so agriculture could become more profitable in many areas again. // Pashinyan: We've witnessed multiple "inflation earthquakes" in recent years. The first was Covid, and now the developments in Ukraine. Food prices are rising. The negatives aside, the land cultivation could become more profitable. We decided not to charge small farmers for water if they install a drip irrigation system, but it's necessary to monitor this program. Traditional agriculture has no future because of water shortage. It's necessary to switch to intensive gardening. // Kerobyan: Global climate change led to +3.5C temperatures in Armenia last year. It's unprecedented. We need to conserve water and redirect it to agriculture. // 1 [2])(https://armenpress.am/arm/news/1076987.html) 3
government is drafting a plan to produce fertilizer in Armenia
There will be subsidies to build small biological fertilizer plants. The goal is to reduce reliance on imports and negate price shocks. https://armenpress.am/arm/news/1076989.html
government is drafting a plan to make Armenia more self-sufficient in meat, poultry, cattle
A new pilot program will launch to help businesses invest in large-scale livestock projects. Minister Kerobyan: Our self-sufficiency is quite low in cattle, pig, and poultry. The draft proposes up to 35% reimbursement of capital expenditures on large projects within 5 years of making the investment. It will be overseen by one of the Big Four audit firms to guarantee effectiveness. The goal is to have large agricultural complexes that will provide enough food. Invest $1 million now, and we'll refund $350,000 within the next five years. // Armenia's main poultry source is Ukraine. There are plans to increase imports from the U.S. and Brazil because of the conflict. 12
Armenia has egg surplus. What to do with them?
Egg prices recently plummeted, forcing one manufacturer to go out of business. Competition Commission: We have a surplus in Armenia. The Economy Ministery and poultry businesses are discussing plans to either export the eggs or to turn them into other products. What's notable is that this time the price drop was a result of policies by small manufacturers with <5% market share. There was a chain reaction. We're trying to minimize regulatory intervention as much as possible, but we'll keep an eye on the egg market ahead of the Easter celebrations. // 12
Gas "price hike" or "calorie hike"? Negotiating for a $165 gas for 10 years.
For years, some consumers speculated that Russian gas supplier was "cheating" the consumer through calorie manipulations. People would anecdotally use a timer to measure how long it takes to boil water on a gas stove. From a January 14 report: The gas price for Armenia will remain $165, but it could reach $177 if the gas quality increases. This isn't a new gas agreement. The Gazprom contract, signed in 2013, envisaged adjustments of the calorific value of gas, which will be applied starting April 1. // Higher quality gas gives more energy, so the seller wants to be "compensated". Gazprom has asked the public utility regulator to set the adaptive pricing model starting in April. For consumers, it translates to between $266 and $283, depending on the quality. Studies conducted in the past few months indicate that Armenia has been receiving higher-quality gas. That means if the pricing were to be approved by the regulator today, consumers would pay $283. // Pashinyan during today's session: Global gas prices skyrocketed last year. We negotiated to preserve the $165 contract. The April price change is related to gas calories. Gazprom raised the calorie for Armenia last year. This price change won't impact 100,000 low-income families, while the residents living near the borders receive subsidies. Utility regulator: The issue of gas calories existed since 2013. There was a calorie adjustment formula but Gazprom repeatedly delayed its implementation due to accumulated problems. This year we addressed all the problems. The issue of preserving the $165 border price for the next 10 years is being solved. It makes sense to calculate the tariff by calorie now. Pashinyan: It is important for all of this to be regulated through institutional means. Utility regulator: We will monitor the gas calorie on the Armenia-Georgia border. The average will be applied to all consumers. [This year's] gas prices were calculated based on the average calorie in 2021, which was 8398. If this year the calorie is lower, the price will drop in 2023. // Officials said there is an opportunity to use "gas volume correctors" in households, and didn't rule out that in the future the gas calorie could be monitored in each household instead of doing it on the border, but right now "it's better to do it on the border". 1234 Tags: #gas #Gazprom
Armenia's budget received $70 million additional revenues from a recent tax hike on miners: Economy Minister
Kerobyan: We are establishing a procedure for export licensing. The export of copper and molybdenum concentrates is temporarily restricted. When we [raised the mining taxes because global metal prices were up] in July 2021, we expected it to generate an additional ֏35B in revenues within the following 6 months. That is exactly what happened. High profits from the exploitation of the country's subsoil will be directed to the development of the manufacturing industry, etc. // http://arka.am/en/news/business/armenia_imposes_temporary_restriction_on_export_of_copper_and_molybdenum_concentrates_/
the construction of Armenia-Iran-Azerbaijan railway is entering the fieldwork phase
Pashinyan: The field works of the Yeraskh-Julfa-Ordubad-Meghri-Horadiz railway's Armenian part, namely of the Meghri region are commencing. Preparatory work is planned for the 43km in the Yeraskh-Meghri section. This is an important event. I'd like to express hope that simultaneously we will de jure record the agreements reached during trilateral meetings in Sochi and Brussels. // Infrastructure Minister: We'll study these locations and specify the standards of ordering the blueprinting works. A number of topics will be studied in these locations: tunnels, halls, stations, irrigation pipes, etc. We're dispatching a specialized 9-member team, comprised of Armenian scientists and South-Caucasian Railways experts. // https://armenpress.am/arm/news/1077021.html

Ethnic Armenian resident of Kherson was killed during the encirclement and capture of the town located north of Crimea. In the southeast, Russian troops encircled the large city Mariupol. A group of Armenian residents successfully evacuated with a car column and headed towards the west. Some Armenians remain in the besieged city. An amphibious operation is reportedly planned to capture Odessa in the southwest. The Russian convoy headed towards Kyiv from the north has "stalled", likely awaiting resupplies and reinforcements. Ukrainian fighter jets were seen carrying out missions. Ukraine said they are targeting Russian convoys, but didn't specify where. A week before the invasion the Ukrainian military presented its 125mph "Punisher" drone. This "stealth" drone can carry 3 explosives capable of destroying vehicles and personnel within 50 meters, they reported. At first they send a small surveillance drone, and once it locates the target, the Punisher is used. The Ukrainian engineer said they've been using it against the breakaway Donbas region for several years. Ukraine reported using the Punisher drone 60 times after the invasion to target Russian fuel storage, ammo supplies, and radars, "up to 30 miles behind enemy lines". 12345
... VOMA's Vardanov about the war
Mil. expert Vova Vardanov: Russia is using jets and very rarely drones, while Ukraine relies on drones. Turkish armies used 80,000 soldiers against tiny Artsakh in 2020. Russia also advanced around 80,000, but on a much bigger territory in Ukraine. Who is warring? On one corner it's our friend Ukraine that sent mercenaries to fight against us in the 1990s. On the other corner, it's Donbas that sent artillery officers to fight against Armenia in the 1990s. Then there is ally Russia that sold weapons to our enemy in exchange for cash, like a true mafia. Armenia must chill and observe the events to learn. // Continue: 1
... negotiations
FM Lavrov: We remain committed to the demilitarization of Ukraine. There should be a list of weapons that can never be deployed or created in Ukraine. // Russia recognizes Zelensky as Ukraine's leader and welcomed as a "positive step" the fact that Zelensky wanted to receive security guarantees. "Our negotiators are ready for the second round." Zelensky said Russia needed to halt its bombing before further talks. As of writing this, there were reports of Russia and Ukraine reaching a humanitarian agreement. 1
... I voted for independence of Donbas, not war: Russian MP
Mikhail Motveyev from the right-wing LDPR party (controlled opposition) was one of the MPs who voted for Russia to officially recognize the independence of Donbas. One option is nuclear energy, but they planned to shut down multiple reactors by the end of this year. Now there are discussions on whether it's a good idea. Germany announced the establishment of a strategic stockpile of coal and gas. Germany's pro-environment party said "nothing is a taboo" when asked if they'd consider coal. Italy's government has prepared plans to resort to coal or oil power plants if gas supplies drop. 1

Friends of hacking group "Anonymous" claimed they broke into Russian space agency Roscosmos's control center and took control of Russian spy satellites. Screenshots of Russian-language servers were shared but the authenticity could not be verified. Roscosmos leader Dmitri Rogozin confirmed the attacks but said they were automatically blocked by their firewall, and called the anonymous hackers "scammers and petty swindlers". He said all the servers were operational. Rogozin went a step further: Russia will treat any hacking of its satellites as a justification for war. We will hunt down the perpetrators. We're supposed to launch OneWeb satellites to space on Friday. It's already on the launchpad. However, we have questions for OneWeb. Not long ago, the UK government became a shareholder. In November we learned that OneWeb was in talks with a Pentagon-linked U.S. company to provide services to the NATO military. Hundreds of OneWeb satellites have been launched. More is necessary to make it fully operational. In the meantime, Elon Musk's Starlink has provided satellite equipment to Ukrainian military. We doubt that OneWeb will abide by its 2019 contract that its satellites would only be used for civilian purposes. After the UK government's recent behavior, it appears the 2019 contracts are void. So we demand OneWeb provide clear legal guarantees by Friday launch that its satellites won't be used by NATO. The only guarantee OneWeb can provide is if the UK government exits as a shareholder. // UK responds: We will not sell our share in OneWeb. There are no negotiations. Rogozin: You have two days to think and provide guarantees. OneWeb won't be able to complete its satellite network without our help. [trampoline?] // OneWeb decided to remove its personnel from Baikonur cosmodrome. They are now "safely offsite and relocated elsewhere within Kazakhstan". European rocket builder Arianespace also evacuated its staff from Baikonur. OneWeb had paid Roscosmos in advance. Rogozin said they won't be refunded due to "force majeure". OneWeb's boss: We are getting the news from Rogozin's Twitter. It sounds crazy but I've seen the letters from Roscosmos and they say nothing that isn't already in Rogozin's tweets. I've just got a visual of that Reservoir Dogs scene, where everyone’s pointing guns at everyone. // OneWeb's board later voted to suspend all launched from Baikonur. 123456

Aftermath of Recent Reddit Stock Hype -- A Gentle reminder -- Use good investment logic!
Recent stocks that were hyped on Reddit are now tanking. These stocks never made it to $1000 and everyone that bought at $100+ is standing to lose a LOT of money - especially those who bought at $300+. In the next few weeks (days, actually), people will be (are now) waking up to huge losses. The basics of investing is like buying and selling anything. Find something you can buy cheap, and try to sell it at a higher price. If a stock has gone up beyond what a 'market price' should be for that stock, it's already expensive. Each time it goes up, it gets more expensive, relative to other stocks in its class. Smart people don't buy when everyone else is buying. Smart people buy cheap, and sell when it's expensive. Buy Low, Sell High. It's really not that complicated. The other tried and true rule is, diversify your holdings to minimize risk. From an economic standpoint, imagine the cost of sugar went up from $10 a pound to $400 dollars a pound. Each time it goes up, there's less likely to be buyers that'll buy it at $425 , or $450. Sooner or later the price will drop back to what consumers are willing to pay for sugar on a daily basis... This 'daily price' is really important. It's the price at which people are willing to purchase it on the open market -- long term. That's called the "market price." When the price goes back down to $20 or even $50, anyone who purchased sugar at the $400 price will be sitting there with hundreds of pounds of sugar that they paid way too much money for... 100 bags bought at $400, and sold when the price is $50 - yields a loss of $350 per bag... That's $35,000 in losses. Yes, $35000 in losses. A LOT of people are waking up to losses this weekend, this big or larger. Those who bought at $400 and see a price drop to $200 have an emotional reaction to losing $200 per bag, and hold onto the stock, HOPING that the price will go back up. The price, however, only continues to go down, returning to the daily 'market price.' Still, people, unable to stomach such losses, continue to lose more and more money. The people making the money with the sugar craze are the ones who were in first, and bought it as it was $15, $30, or $50... As the price went up, the percentage of the total sugar market you can buy decreases. The later people join in, the less probability they have of making money. Those who bought cheap, $15-$50 a bag, were able to buy a LOT of bags of sugar. As such, they hold the most bags of sugar. Those who bought later, own much less sugar, unless they are super rich -- but the super rich don't play these games -- they already know not to buy sugar when its this expensive, because they know they'll lose... So it's the people that have the $15-$50 bags that have most of the price power, and bought the most sugar. Once they start selling, they have much more influence over the price, because they have more of it. So, someone who bought a LOT of bags at $50 a bag of sugar, look at how much they've made -- when the price gets to $100, they doubled their money. $150, they've tripled their money... $400, they've multiplied their money by 8. Someone who purchased at $20 (and likely bought many more bags than even those at $50) has made 20 times their initial investment. So for instance, someone that invested $40,000 when the price was $20, has now made $800,000 dollars. At some point, these people start seeing how much money they've made and start thinking, how much am I willing to risk, losing this 800K? So, they sell. All that sugar entering the market starts driving the price down, HARD, and other early buyers sell too, worried they'll lose their 800k too. What happens on Reddit? Those who bought in at $200, $300 or $400, start posting things like "I'm Holding, All the way to $1000!!!!" And, they start BLAMING those who "Sold out" and sold their stock... thinking it's "unfair" for these people to start selling. What's unfair? Nothing's unfair. Why do they post this? Because they are dead scared of losing if the stock goes back down. They have to start drumming up enough interest to keep the artificial prices higher, even when theres nothing but "Emotion" propping up the price in the first place. As the stock price gets higher, it takes exponentially more emotion to keep the price at the higher price point. You saw that on the reddit forums. But meanwhile, emotion isn't going to keep the guy that made $800k (and there were many who made over 4 million).... People eventually think... I've made enough... time to sell... Stocks are not about emotion, it's about economics. If you play the economic game, you can make money. Those who play on emotion, lose. When the guy sells a ton of sugar into the market, (remember the guys that bought cheap --- have the MOST bags of sugar) --- what happens? the market gets FLOODED with sugar. There's not enough emotion to entice NEW people in to purchase sugar at 20X the market price. You've already priced all but the 'market speculators' out of the game. Anyone with investment sense has already taken their money and gone home, to buy a new car. The only people left, are those who don't understand stocks, and hence, have much less money (they havn't learned the game yet). So, when the market is flooded, the price starts going down, because there's not enough people willing to buy at such a high price. This sucks the money out of the pockets of those who bought it at a higher price. The price goes lower, and lower and lower. Eventually, the market is left with those, who cannot stand to lose $35,000. (which was likely their life savings)... All that money goes into the pockets of those who bought low. So, according to market dynamics, the ones who start the feeding frenzy make the money, those who join in later simply hand their money over to those who got in first. Unfair you say? Nope, It's economics. The only ones crying 'foul' are the ones who treat stocks like gambling, or ignore simple market dynamics. If you want to lose money, treat stocks like gambling. If you run to the 'hot' tables, you'll only lose out, because those late to the table, don't make money, they only lose. Those late to the table, buy things at prices that are too high, and simply hand their money over to those who decide to sell. You want to make money? Don't buy high and sell low. It's as simple as that. Treat it like you would running your own business. Find something cheap, something you think you'd be able to sell later and make money on, and find a way to sell it higher to someone else. Investing is business. But, most people won't listen to this, they're looking for the next big thing on Reddit. Odds are, you are going to lose a lot of money. Yes less than 1% will make something. But odds are, it won't be you. Important statistics:
Most of these events like the sugar analogy, end up with huge reversals, and people losing lots of money.
97% of day traders LOSE money (i.e. you cannot "time" [predict] the market)
Less than 1% of day traders earn MORE than minimum wage
It's almost IMPOSSIBLE to reliably out perform the market (S&P500, or Nasdaq). A few good trades are reliably followed by a lot of misses. As a result, studies show, no one consistently outperforms the market. If it were that easy, ALL the mutual funds would be seeing huge returns. They dont. No one consistently outperforms the market.
Most of what you read on the internet is false. Anyone can doctor a screenshot of their investment portfolio. Even if it IS true, you are looking at the less than .1% that made something work. Odds are, they cannot do it reliably to make money long term.
It doesn't matter, because most people reading this will be moved by emotion on the "Next sure thing" that isn't. And, as a result, they'll continue to be in the 99% that cannot earn more than minimum wage.
News that is still dominated by American [high] inflation and Chinese [low] demand. Everything now depends on American employment levels. As long as they stay high (for them), then the world may get a softer landing than otherwise. But the Chinese situation isn't helping. Trouble in both the #1 and #2 economies in the world has ripple impacts globally. Together they account for more than 42% of the world's economic activity. Today's financial markets are acting like a herd stampede, one that is changing direction. No-one seems to want to believe the 2022 direction so far is the right way. Equity prices are diving. Bond yields are jumping (bond prices are sinking). And the US dollar is rising fast. Commodity currencies are being devalued. It is another sharp re-rating lower, the fifth such event in 2022 alone. Only once (in the second half of March) has their been a recovery from one of these shifts lower. They are becoming much more frequent, and that tells you something important. In 2021 there was only one of these selloffs. In 2020, there was only the sharp pandemic selloff. https://preview.redd.it/7r8j3iyw6g591.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=570bc377a45dd9d0f3ee5505977c25cf55bf9553 In both 2020 and 2021 there was a full recovery pushing equity prices to the record highs that ended at the end of December 2021. The track has been down from there, in these increasing selloff events. Since the market high right at the start of 2022, the S&P500 has fallen more than -20%, so it is now a bear market for equities. And many now expect the main rate curves to invert soon. Further, commodity prices are almost all falling today. Last week markets were confident the US Fed will raise its policy rate by +50 bps at their next meeting on Thursday. Yesterday, that expectations went up to +75 bps. Today, markets seem to be expecting a reasonable change a +100 bps hike is coming. This is "fluid" as they say, or others may say "panicky". Meanwhile, in their large and regular survey, the New York Fed's consumer expectations report showed that inflation expectations over the year ahead rose in May, but only back to the +6.6% level they were at in March. They were last at this level in June 2013. Those surveyed thought their incomes would rise only +3% in a year, but they seemed unusually bullish about their spending, saying this would rise by +9%. At the same time, they expect access to consumer debt to get harder. Something has to give, because the overall sense of these expectations hardly makes a lot of sense in the current economic climate. In China, street protests broke out in Shanghai over the rolling lockdowns. They were relatively small because the risks for doing so are so high, but that they happened at all reveals the extreme pressure on small merchants. In Australia, their energy regulator is raising its warnings and has introduced price caps and ordered generators to keep running, as it signals that parts of Queensland face possible blackouts as early as today. Meanwhile, world trade in services is facing a huge threat. At the World Trade Organisation summit of 120 ministers in Geneva, India, Indonesia and South Africa are refusing to renew a two-year “moratorium” that bans the WTO’s 164 member countries from imposing customs duties on ecommerce. The fear is that a round of taxes are coming for global ecommerce. The inflationary impact would be huge. The UST 10yr yield will start today up a remarkable +24 bps from this time yesterday at 3.41%. Rate curves are flattening with mid maturities rising faster than long. The UST 2-10 rate curve is marginally flatter at +9 bps and their 1-5 curve is much flatter at +65 bps. Their 30 day-10yr curve is steeper however at +222 bps. The Australian ten year bond is up sharply at 3.93% and a +16 bps jump. The China Govt ten year bond is little-changed at 2.82%. And the New Zealand Govt ten year will start today at 4.04%, a rise of +13 bps from this time yesterday. This is an almost 7-year high. Equity markets are re-rating lower sharply. In New York, the S&P500 is down -3.1% in Monday afternoon trade. Overnight, European markets fell more than -2.5%, except London which was down -1.5%. Tokyo ended yesterday down -3.0%, Hong Kong was down -3.4%, and Shanghai was down -0.9%. The ASX200 ended down -1.3% which the NZX50 ended down -1.9% to start the week. The price of gold is down a sharpish -US$43 in New York, now at US$1829/oz, knocked around by the strong US dollar. But oil prices are little-changed from this time yesterday, still at just under US$118.50/bbl in the US, while the international Brent price is now just over US$120.50/bbl. However, because it is holding its price in US dollars, it is an effective rise for most other buyers. The Kiwi dollar will open today sharply lower at just on 62.8 USc and a -¾c retreat from this time yesterday. Since the start of June that is now a -3.9% devaluation. Since the start of the year it is an -8% devaluation. The Australian dollar is being hit slightly harder and we are a little firmer at 90.4 AUc. Against the euro we are down at 60.1 euro cents and now at month-ago levels. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just under 70.8, and down another -50 bps since this time yesterday. But that is only at a level we were last at on May 19, 2022. So it really is all about the outsized gains by the greenback rather than anything to do with the NZD. The bitcoin price has fallen by a remarkable -17% from this time yesterday and is now at just US$23,163. And it has been a very tough ride down, at one point in between it got as low as US$22,602. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been unprecedented at +/- 12%. It is now below NZ$40,000 for the first time in 18 months, and it is well below. Not helping was that a major crypto network froze withdrawals and transfers, causing widespread alarm in these markets. Source: Interest .co .nz
